A Visual Game

This blog is an in-depth look at the process of creating 'A Visual Game', a radio documentary centred on the prevalence of audio description commentary at football matches, the impact on those who use it - as well as asking why some clubs don't.  

 

For well over a year now, I have been lucky enough to commentate live at St Mary's Stadium for visually impaired and partially sighted spectators as an AD commentator.....

BUT WHAT IS AUDIO DESCRIPTION? 

 

Audio Description, or AD, is a form of commentary which narrates the action in a heavily descriptive and detailed manner. If something happens in the match, the listener will know exactly what happened, where it occurred and how it transpired. 

 

WHAT WILL THIS DOCUMENTARY FIND OUT?

 

This documentary will aim to understand the following: 

• The impact that AD can have on the lives of  visually impaired football fans.

• How its prevalence has been strengthened in recent times.

• Why some big name clubs still don't provide the service.
